why is the square root of -1 i

-1^0, or 1/2. This is the case with all numbers inputted into the equation: -1^x = x. However, there are some cases in which this does not happen. For example, if you are multiplying two negatives (-5 and -4), then instead of getting +20 (which would be the answer for a positive) you get -40. The square root of that number is said to be i because it equals (-5)^(+4). This is a case in which the square root does not have an answer.

I can’t remember who said it, but somebody once told me that if you think of numbers as coordinates on x and y axis then throwing one to the other will always result in another number. This statement isn’t exactly true though because there are some cases where this doesn’t happen: multiplying two negatives (-x)(-y) for example. The square root of -40 would be i since it equals (–(+))^(+) = +(-). There really is no way to find out what these roots actually mean so we just call them “i” or “j”.

The Square Root of -0.25

-0.25 is a positive number.

-0.25 squared equals (-) (which means it would be negative), so the square root of -0.25 has to be a negative number, which makes sense because you can’t take the square root of 0 and end up with something different than what you started with, or in this case, we wouldn’t have anything left! The answer for the square root of -0.25 is –i = i(-x). This equation looks really complicated but I guess that’s all there is to it? It seems like every time I write an article on math something changes anyways so who knows if any one will even read this whole thing…

The Square Root of -16

I can’t believe this. -16 squared equals ( ), so the square root of -16 has to be a positive number, which makes no sense because you can take the square root of any point on a graph and end up with something different than what you started with! The answer for the square root of 16 is .i = i(x). This equation looks really complicated but I guess that’s all there is to it? It seems like every time I write an article on math something changes anyways so who knows if any one will even read this whole thing… I’m going to stop writing now.. The Square Root of -0.25 – 0.25 is a positive number; when we get down to
