Older, nontraditional students attend college for many reasons. Some are returning to school after a break in their education, some have been out of the work force and want to get back into it, while others are looking for new careers or just enjoy learning! Whatever your reason is for coming back to school as an older student, there are many resources available that will help you succeed.

One thing I’ve learned from my experience as both a traditional student at 18 years old when I started college and now attending classes as a nontraditional student at 28 years old, is that there are many people who want to help you.

–    Your college has programs in place specifically for older students looking for guidance and support  such as the office of Adult Students or resources such as an orientation geared towards your age group which will provide all the information about what classes would be best for you based on your life experience and work history. They also have staff members with expertise in advising adults who can answer questions related to making decisions about financial aid loans, scholarships, transferring credits from other colleges, selecting courses after high school graduation or deciding if going back to school is right for them. This resource often goes overlooked by traditional students but it’s very -they have a desire to learn new skills -to develop life skills that can be used outside of the workplace -because they want to make use of their retirement savings and enjoy themselves in old age -they need to update their knowledge or job skill set before retiring from work. a) They have a desire to learn new skills, b) To develop life skills that can be used outside of the workplace, c) Because they want to make use of their retirement savings and enjoy themselves in old age, d) They need to update their knowledge or job skill set before retiring from work.
