I think this is a big misconception. Business ethics is a set of guidelines that help us to navigate the ethical dilemma of doing something that benefits us in our business and the way we perceive our own role as a business.
For example, most of us would probably agree that if I have a personal interest in a product or service I will make it available to my customers and give them a fair chance and a fair price. If it doesn’t work out, I’ll fix it. If it does and I’m unhappy about it, I’ll give it to someone else.
Business ethics is often a dirty word, but it is a real and useful concept to keep in mind. We don’t need to be rigid about it. We don’t need to demand to be paid in a certain amount of money, we don’t need to live our lives according to a set of specific rules, and we certainly don’t need to be afraid to do something that could have negative consequences.
I like it when I put business ethics at the forefront of my mind. It helps me set a higher standard and helps me not get paralyzed with fear. I also know that if I screw up, I can always walk away from it. I can put my foot down, and it will be fixed. I also know that I can be self-centered and want to do everything for everyone.
I know this is the kind of thing that I’m talking about because I’ve had to deal with it at some point in my career. When someone tells me to do something, I always say, “Well, I’m not sure, but…” and then I ask questions to see if I can come up with a better alternative.
Business ethics is a hard thing to define, but its most common definition is that an ethical decision is based on the idea that we’re all on a spectrum and everyone is equal in their own opinion. Not everyone agrees with me, but I respect everyone’s right to do whatever they want. Whether it’s a decision that’s just a little bit more ethical than I would like, I always ask myself if there is a better alternative.
Business ethics is an elusive concept, but what we can say for certain is that there is no such thing as business ethics. Sure, you might like your business to be ethical, but if you don’t, then you’re not really ethical. Now, the only way to test the boundaries of business ethics is to look at the world through the eyes of a business.
Sure, you may not have a ton of money, but you do have a lot of power, so how does it affect you if you choose to be unethical? Some people have a really hard time accepting the idea that it really matters to them whether or not they have a job.
Well, the truth is that there is no such thing as business ethics, because if you want to be ethical then you have to be ethical. So how much you can choose to be ethical, is up to you.
Business ethics have to do with how you treat your employees and how you treat your customers. This is a really important concept, because it means that you can’t treat people like robots and expect them to act like robots. You have to be willing to have them think for themselves, and that takes some getting used to.
