There are three levels of self-awareness: The first is what the ancient Greeks called the “conscious level,” which is the first level of awareness where one is aware of one’s inner state. The second is where we’re aware of our outer state, and the third is our inner state. The second and third levels of awareness are both important, but the third one is more important because it’s what we’re most aware of.
Self-awareness is the most important part of self-awareness so it is the level we use the most. In the second level of awareness you are aware of how you feel. In the third level you are aware of your thoughts and feelings. In order to be able to practice this level of awareness you need to be able to clearly see your inner thoughts and feelings.
As it turns out, we are not talking about the usual self-awareness that we experience when we look in the mirror. Instead we’re talking about the third level of awareness you are not aware of your innermost thoughts. It is when you are unaware of how you feel that you can be aware of how you’re feeling. We’re not referring to those feelings of anger, sadness, and fear that we all have. Instead we’re talking about the feeling of being aware of how you feel.
This feeling of being aware of how you feel is often labeled as “feeling out your feelings.” You can have these feelings in different ways. When you’re feeling happy or annoyed you can also feel the need to justify your feelings or the feeling of feeling happy or annoyed. These are the feelings that you are not aware of. Instead you are aware of the feeling that you have but not of the feeling of the feeling.
