This week’s topic revolves around a topic I’ve been thinking about a lot. “The purpose of government is to make the people who live in it rich” is a quote from Thomas Jefferson. I’ve been thinking about the purpose of government for a long time and it has always been the same to me – to make the people who live in it rich. I recently attended a workshop hosted by a local government organization about the purpose of government.
The workshop was an example of how the local government has been trying to change. They changed their budgeting policies to make local government more transparent and accountable. To do so they developed their own set of policies and practices to ensure that they were meeting the stated purpose of government. The organization that hosted the workshop, The City of Austin, has since developed a set of policies to ensure that their government is more transparent and accountable.
It’s good to see that the government is getting some serious attention from local leaders for their transparency and accountability. But I do worry that what they’re proposing is too big a change for them to make it. I mean, what is government, really, if it isn’t accountable to the people? It seems to me that it should be, but maybe the changes made to the government are just too big for them to make them.
In general government policy is a huge topic that I have trouble getting my head around. I imagine it’s probably because government is the center of our economy and our society, and we’re all busy with our own agendas. It’s hard to see government as anything other than a collection of people who can’t agree with each other and who want to make sure their own power and money is in their own hands.
In general, government policy is made up of things like tax hikes, spending increases, and the making of laws. For example, when we think about the government in the US, its pretty obvious that we need to make many, many laws, but when we think about how much money we spend and how much we tax, it’s hard to imagine that government can be that inefficient. We have to spend more money and tax less to provide government services, and that’s what the laws are for.
The real trouble with government is that we don’t really control it. The government is a collection of people, each of whom has their own ideas about what government should be. Some people think that government is awesome, and others think that government is awful. We need to be able to decide which one we want to be in charge.
Right now we’re in a situation with local governments across America. Some people think that local governments should just be run by people who aren’t really local, and some people think that local governments should be run by government people. They are both true; however, the reality is that there is a lot of overlap between the two groups. Government people tend to tend to think that government is awesome (they are the ones who set up the government).
This overlap is not only seen in local government finance, but in many other areas of our lives. Most people think that a government can be made better by people who arent in it. The same is true of a business, especially in our case. A business is run by management people, and they can be great at making it better. In fact, the best management people tend to like to get involved in politics.
This is the problem with most government departments and boards, especially those of local government. The only reason they exist is to make the government run better and more efficiently. If they were to be involved in politics, they would tend to want to do the exact opposite. For example, the city of Atlanta, GA. has a city manager who is in politics. The city manager is elected and can propose or get rid of whatever policies he wants to see implemented.
