The best way for any new member of a production company or union to learn about their job is simply by asking as questions! A great first step when you’re starting out might be talking with the key grip (the person who takes care of setting up all lights) or electrician (who sets up power sources). These people are not only highly knowledgeable about how things work on set, they also tend to have good ideas for how newcomers can contribute during setup: “Where do I start? Where should my tools go?”
Actors and production assistants often work on the set together, each with their own responsibilities. Actors are usually in charge of “blocking” which means figuring out how to move from place-to-place safely while filming scenes.
