The IOM is an American organization with the goal of developing national and international health policy. In 1990, they published their Six Aims for Health Care to help guide reform efforts in the United States. These six aims were designed to make sure that our medical system was doing a better job at: 1) promoting health and preventing disease, 2) restoring health when it has been lost or impaired, 3) providing comprehensive care without limitation as to time or place, 4) ensuring competent care through appropriate training and supervision of personnel, 5) delivering services equitably across all population groups regardless of race, ethnicity, gender or socioeconomic status; and 6) encouraging personal responsibility for one’s own behavior.

The institute’s goal is to improve people’s lives through research, education, and advocacy for better care. They offer a wide range of products which cover everything from clinical topics like cardiovascular disease or AIDS/HIV infection, to public policy issues such as healthy lifestyles or long-term care services.
