In a new video for the New York Times, Nippon Ichi Software President Sohei Niikawa revealed some of his company’s more “evil genius” marketing strategies.
The article then goes into detail about how they use these tactics to leverage their success in Japan abroad, mostly by understanding the psychology behind addictive games and utilizing that knowledge to keep players coming back for more. One example given is the Amnesia series, which has been downloaded over five million times despite its high difficulty levels because it offers an experience no other game can: complete psychological hysteria from beginning to end. The only way out? Cheating with save files or continuing your progress on another handheld console (both options are frowned upon). Harsh but true!

Nippon Ichi Software is evil. We know this, but people are not going to stop buying their games because they’re too good at what they do.
– What does NIS have that other companies don’t? Lets take a quick look:
– Nostalgia – While it’s been around for 20 years and the name doesn’t ring many bells now, most of us used to play these types of games with our siblings, friends or parents as kids so we want to feel nostalgic by watching them being played today. And on top of nostalgia there’s just something about seeing an old school game in HD graphics that makes you love it even more!
– Word Of Mouth Marketing – With so many games that come out each year, it’s hard to keep up. But NIS is one of those companies that you know will always be releasing a new game every few months and as soon as they announce a release date for their next title, the internet explodes with hype. It becomes difficult not to want to buy into what everyone else has already bought in too!
– Cult Following – With such an underground following, there are people all over social media who live just waiting for any bit of information about a new release from them; this extreme level of interest means if someone tells me I need to play Yomawari: Night Alone then I’m going on Amazon or Steam right away
– Limited Edition Physical Merchandise – Not many games these days come with physical goodies, but Nippon Ichi games always have a few in store for collectors
– Fan Events – There are often special events held at their headquarters or even just meet and greets that fans line up hours before to attend. It’s not uncommon for lines of people wearing fan tshirts from previous titles to be seen waiting outside the building in anticipation
I don’t want it because they’re making me addicted! All these marketing strategies combined is what has made this little company one of my favorite developers on any platform. With such an underground following, then if someone tells me I need to play Yomawari: Night Alone then I’m going on Amazon or Steam right away When you give them money, One of the ways that marketers are making you addicted to their products is by getting your friends hooked on it first. They will often do this through social engineering, or influencing people’s decisions indirectly rather than directly. For example, Nippon Ichi Software has a Facebook page for all its games with an “Add Friend” button in the upper right corner. If someone clicked on this and added them as a friend, then they could see what game updates were happening and eventually get tempted into buying new games themselves. Another way markets make consumers addicted is by using gamification techniques like leaderboards and achievements to give us rewards for actions we take such as completing quests or killing enemies. This gives gamers feelings of accomplishment
