What Happens When Her Baby has Heart Failure

January 6th, 2010

As a mother, how would you feel when you find out that your baby was born with a heart defect? Devastating indeed, after spending the previous nine months nurturing the life inside your body, it is really difficult to cope up with the knowledge that your baby has heart failure. Where did I go wrong is the most common question.

You barely had enough time to absorb everything and yet here it is your baby is going to need serious but necessary Heart Surgery. Your newborn baby is in the intensive care unit. This is also where most of your baby’s pre- and post-operative care will happen. To decrease the danger of disease, hospitals often limit visitation to parents only. Many mothers who had experienced it say that the hardest part is saying goodbye to their babies. Feelings of fear, sadness and guilt are ordinary. Talking to a nurse or social worker about these feelings can help you deal with all the pressure and nervousness. When your baby can go home, you’ll have to be careful to keep her away from sickness which may pose complications. You may need to stay inside the house for a while because your baby may have to take many medicines at different times every day. It’s hard for parents to see their children go through something stressful especially a heart surgery, even when it’s so important for their health. Knowing what to expect in advance can make the experience a little easier to bear.
